IFA organizer bolsters security over terrorism woes

The organizer of the Internationale Funkausstellung in Berlin plans to expand security measures amid rising concerns over terrorism, industry sources said Monday.

The move comes as around 240,000 visitors are expected to visit the venue of the global tech fair, which kicks off for a six-day run on Sept. 1.

South Korea's tech giants, including Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., will participate in the annual event.

Sources said while there have been no signs of possible attacks at the event's venue, the organizer has been expanding security measures to ensure safety.

An organizing official said necessary measures will be taken, such as expanding the number of police force deployed around the venue.

South Korea's foreign ministry currently advises travelers to refrain from visiting airports, train stations, department stores and theaters in Germany, adding such locations are vulnerable to terrorists.

In December, a terrorist attack in Berlin claimed 12 lives. There also have been various threats throughout this year as well. (Yonhap)
